For a parent, is there any other word that strikes fear into your heart first thing in the morning like “devotions”? “Train up your child in the way of the lord so they won’t depart from it.”Could there be a more pressure filled scripture in all of the Bible?? There’s so many things to think about: what exactly does the way of the Lord look like? Do we train 4 days a week? 6 days a week and rest on the last day? What if we do 2-a-days? Would that make them even stronger? If we skip a few days because we’re on vacation, will their hedge of protection lose some of its power to, well, protect them?

Then what do we study? Do we just go full on King James exegesis and lay the ground work for years of deep theological study or grab the newest, latest and greatest-“hipster-self-help-for-kids-guide-to-complete-Joy”devotional and begin walking them through the 7 steps to being better people? There’s a ton to think about!

Well, let me start off by saying we’ve not mastered any of this. Even after parenting for 11 years, we still struggle with the daily, consistent family time with Jesus. But I’ve come to the conclusion that what’s more important than sitting down and reading through a book or guide is an actual walked out, authentic, messed up, repenting, celebrating and never ending relationship with Jesus. Our kids care more about seeing Jesus in us than reading about him. They will follow Him as we follow him.

We’ve had good seasons and horrible seasons of consistent time in the Word, but have never lost sight of who our source is. It’s not a book it’s a person. Jesus is full of love and laughter and joy and peace. He loved kids so much that he took the time to bring them close, sit them on his lap and just love on them. Probably handed out his fair share of tickle monsters and noogies and found the best hiding spots for hide and seek! I believe Jesus was more focused on showing the love of the Father than teaching them the rules of the day. He knew the Pharisees were already doing that. He just wanted to hold his kids close and reassure them of his love. That’s what devotions are supposed to be. A reassuring of the fathers love to kids we love.

So as you dig through all of the journals and devotionals at your nearest bookstore, just remember, he’s pleased with your effort and will bless it. Focus on them and loving them throughout the day. Jesus promised to water and grow the seed if we will just be faithful to plant it. Let’s keep loving our kids and spouses, giving lots of grace and keep Jesus at the center of everything, and when we do, they won’t WANT to depart from this incredible journey.
